The day the laughter stopped

On Friday, April 1, 2005 our dear friend Angelo Triandafiliou died.  I have written this and I am reading it over and over, but I still do not believe it happened.  Is it some trick of the mind that convinces us that we can undo what is done?  I can still see his image.  I can still hear his great booming laugh.  I can still talk to him, but, unlike this computer that I’m using to write this, I have no “undo” key that I can press to put things back the way they were.  Has the laughter really stopped, forever?  Wait…I hear something…..a voice, a great booming voice telling me to, “Push the memory button stupid!”  That had to be Angelo.  He was always there to help me with all my computer problems.

We all have our personal memory keys that we can push to revisit all the good times we had together.  If we all keep pushing, Angelo will be forever in our thoughts.

God has blessed you, Angelo, and we will  always have you in our hearts.

Your friend,  Art

Forever Angelo

It is with heavy heart that we must bid farewell to Angelo, one of our brightest lights,  who was so suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us when a blood clot in his lung moved into his heart.   We are all stunned with his loss, but our hearts and prayers do go out to his wife, Donna, daughters, Jennifer, Steph and Alicia and to his beloved grandchildren.  Angelo will be deeply and dearly missed by his family, his church, his guild and his many, many friends.

To know him was to love him.

All who knew Angelo not only appreciated his fine woodworking skill, but  were touched by his kindness, his thoughtfulness, his generosity and his wit.  He was a driving force behind and intricate part of everything this guild has accomplished..if it needed to be done..Angelo was there.  Our guild and our meetings… made richer because of him… will never be the same.

Rest in peace, Angelo… Thank you for everything …we shall miss you, dear friend

Guild Meeting April 19, 2005  3rd Tuesday
Place

Lehigh County Senior Citizens Center

1633 Elm St. Allentown, Pa.

Program

Adolph Schneider, our resident expert on Marquetry, will open his presentation with a Slide Show that will cover everything from the “Nuts & Bolts” of this subject to the ins and outs of vacuum bagging.  Craig Bentzley will be Adolph’s able assistant.

March Drag-in & Brag-0n:

At our July 2004 meeting Russ Reinhard showed us some pieces and parts for a single drawer table of his own design.  He had started it while at Peter Korns Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine.  He promised that he would eventually get all the pieces together and make a proper showing at a later meeting.  Well folks,

here’s the results of a lot of hard work.  Materials are Maple and Walnut.

Tom Biello made his first appearance with the Jewelry Box in Red Oak that he made for his daughter.  He still has to install the hardware and apply a finish.

 Book Sale:

Because the Guild is such a good customer, we have been granted a few extra days to take advantage of our meeting date of the 19th.  We will have book lists available for members to make their selections.  Repeat after me:  “A good book is the cheapest Apprenticeship you can buy.”

 March Highlights:

Fred Matlack came to the rescue again when he agreed to dip into his bag of woodworking tricks to give us another “short notice” presentation.  The topic he chose was the layout and fabrication of segmented straight or tapered cylinders.

Straight cylinders are the easier of the two.  Decide how many sides (staves) are required and divide 360 degrees by this number.  The answer is the number of degrees to set the blade angle to.  This will work for any diameter or number of staves.

Tapered cylinders are a little more involved since the slope angle of the taper requires the use of a miter gauge in addition to the beveled blade to make the compound cuts.  The following series of pictures illustrate the glue-up of all the segments.

In 1998 Tony O’Malley edited a Rodale woodworking book titled:  The Woodworker’s Problem Solver.  Fred Matlack was one of the contributors to this work along with seventy-seven other quite famous woodworker’s.   The section on setting up compound miter cuts is clear and concise.

As usual, Fred’s presentation was a chuckle trip.  He is very descriptive and easy to follow.  Thanks again Fred for your never saying no when we need you.  Best you stay on your toes because you know we will be coming for you again.

How come we never had this much fun trying to learn something in school.

Remembering Angelo..
