Meeting: February 15,  2005    3rd Tues
Place:

Lehigh County. Senior Center

1633 Elm St., Allentown, Pa.

Program:

Shop Safety – Russ Reinhart, Art Silva & Bob Tinsman

February Meeting:

As Norm would say:  “Before we get started lets talk about shop safety”.  We have had many programs, but we have never had a program that dealt exclusively with this very important subject.  This is a good time to discuss the things that contribute good shop safety.

January Drag-in & Brag-on:

We are very disappointed that Andy Bukovsky, with a “K”, did not exhibit anything this month.  But we did spell his name right this time!

Matt Doyle led off with a Walnut and Maple Cutting Board finished with salad bowl oil. The second picture shows the nice grain patterns, and the matching of end grain strips with long grain.  Don’t go too many miles between lube jobs on this one Matt.

Dave Nichols showed two clocks.  One of Mahogany with a lacquer finish, and one of Maple with three coats of French polish

John Uhler, whose Lathe never seems to get a rest is now turning pens using blanks and kits purchased at Woodcraft.

This writer’s notes give no clue as to what John is holding up, so I’ll say it is either a tree ornament or a very fat pen. Good work John.

Mang Ed Note..It’s an ornament with inlay turned from a Taggoa Nut.  The Nut was given to John by LV Woodturners.

 January Highlights:

Mike Peters was the featured speaker for the evening and it was all about drying lumber.

This chart shows how the cellular make-up of wood absorbs and sheds water with changes in temperature and humidity.

Mike had Louise handle his light work by setting a length of log on the table that had been sectioned to illustrate how to cut a log to yield quarter and rift sawn planks.

The lesson here aside from wood knowledge is don’t mess with Louise.

Mike took pieces from the log for a closer look at the grain pattern differences

It is always a pleasure to have Mike and Louise give a presentation.  They come well prepared, they always have handout goodies, a strong knowledge of the material that keeps woodworkers happy, and that keeps their business at Shady Lane Tree Farm prosperous.

Mike and Louise brought their friend Larry Newswanger to the meeting and he just happens to work for the Pa. Dept of Conservation and Resources.

This department is responsible for Forest management, wildlife habitat, roads and fire protection.

Larry talked about the different diseases and blights that have attacked Elm and Chestnut trees and other species in the past, and the current problem with Hemlock and other trees.

Larry said the Asian Long Horn Beetle is causing a lot of problems and that they have not come up with a deterrent yet.

He said two things that elicited more than a few gasps from the crowd.  The first was that there are no laws governing the harvesting of timber in Pennsylvania.  The second was that an acre of old growth Pennsylvania Black Cherry could conceivably be worth $1,000,000 depending on the density of the stand.  This writer has two acres without a Cherry tree in sight.  Time to start planting pits!

 Members Mart:

Larry Beers has these items for sale as a package.

JessEm Router Master lift assembly, in a JessEm Phenolic table top.

The unit is 2-1/2 years old and has been used very little in that time span.  It is in excellent condition.  The top is kept polished and it will accommodate the Porter-Cable 7518, 3-1/4 HP router.

The original price was $480. and the sale price is $380.00. Larry can be reached on his cell # 610-533-2999

 Space Fillers:

 Steve Young’s Guitar.

Last month we ran out space and could not show some great work.  We are including them here.
